Aslan Kasimov, who graduated with a doctoral degree from the Department of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics in 2004, was one of 29 young researchers to receive a three-year Young Investigator Award from the Air Force Office of Scientific Research. A total of 215 proposals were submitted for the prestigious award, which supports scientists and engineers who have received a doctoral degree or equivalent in the past five years and demonstrate exceptional promise in basic research. Kasimov, who is currently a teaching fellow in the math department at MIT, is a former student of MechSE Professor Scott Stewart. Kasimov will use the award to perform accurate numerical simulation and analysis of multi-dimensional shock and detonation waves.
