Standardization has emerged as a new cultural trend in the 21st century. Smoking on sidewalks is yet to be banned at the international level, but it is certainly being prohibited by a growing number of countries around the world. The same holds true for words. Buzzwords in one place quickly catch on in other countries. While cultural diversity is still touted by many as worth preserving, it is quickly being diminished under the pressure of globalization. Standardization in this context is often driven by commercial motivations of corporate players, which sometimes gives rise to unexpected frictions between nations. For the past 30 years, the trend of globalization has been clashing with regionalization, particularly centered around Muslim World, India, South America and Russia. Likewise, terminologies in the fields of economy, politics, defense, law, medicine, technology, education, culture, arts and others have been newly created, transformed, distorted and re-assembled—a reflection of the epistemological clash throughout society. Against this background, the translation and interpreting academia is called on to ponder upon the dynamism surrounding the problems of terminology.
