В рамках Российско-Германского сотрудничества в области охраны окружающей среды совместными усилиями сотрудников Федерального Ведомства охраны природы Германии и Института экологического почвоведения МГУ (Российский Проект «Экологическое Содружество») в 2003 г. была разработана, а в 2004 г. – создана многоязычная Интернет-ориентированная образовательная платформа «Biodiversity Detectives» («BioDets»), базирующаяся на Конвенции о биологическом разнообразии и Глобальной инициативе по развитию коммуникаций, образования и просвещения населения (CEPA). 16 февраля 2004 г. Платформа «BioDets» и ее первый пилотный проект «Наутилус» капитана Немо» были представлены на VII Конференции стран – участников Конвенции о биологическом разнообразии, где получили высокую оценку и одобрение представителей Комитета Конвенции и участников Конференции. В конце 2004 г. в Лауфене (Германия) координаторы Платформы и привлеченные специалисты из Франкфуртского университета и Германского Общества по техническому сотрудничеству (GTZ) подвели итоги реализации пилотного проекта «Наутилус» капитана Немо», обсудили проблемы и наметили пути их решения.Реализация пилотного проекта осуществлялась в апреле – ноябре 2004 г. В изучении водоемов и их обитателей приняли участие 24 российские эколого-образовательные организации (школы, лицеи, эколого-биологические центры), 6 немецких школ, 1 финская школа, 1 школа из Казахстана, Белорусский Республиканский эколого-биологический центр. Российские участники выполнили свои отчеты на трех языках (русском, немецком, английском). Кроме того, финская и канадская сети, занимающиеся исследованиями воды, опубликовали сообщения на сайте «BioDets».
