Purification and recycling of agriculturally used water are issues that are receiving rapidly growing attention. Algae can accumulate large quantities of nitrogen and phosphate and thus have the potential to clean wastewater as well as to be used as nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. The second BioSC workshop on this topic with international participation will take place at NGP2 Aachen on the 19th and 20th of September 2019 and will be hosted by the BioSC and the IBG-2 of Forschungszentrum Jülich. The workshop will be organized by Tania V. Fernandes (Wageningen), Ladislav Nedbal (Jülich), and Patrik Jones (London). Motivation: We continue developing algae as vehicles for sustainable nutrient recycling and water reuse in agriculture. This topic is highly critical as we are globally on the edge of our planetary boundaries, particularly with respect to phosphorous. The environmental pollution caused by current practices costs society several hundred billion Euro each year. Algae can accumulate large amounts of nutrients from wastewater and at the same time also clean the water, thereby making a game changing difference to the sustainability of human food production. Associated to the Workshop in Aachen is the internal ATS Experiment Campaign Workshop at the Forschungszentrum Jülich on September 18th, 2019.
