The Fifth St. Petersburg Winter Workshop on Experimental Studies of Speech and Language (Night Whites 2019) will be hosted by St. Petersburg State University, Russia, on December 16-17, 2019. The talks will focus on topics broadly defined as experimental studies of human language. The keynote lectures at the workshop will be given by: Anna Borghi, Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Abstract concepts: an example of how language enhances cognition Silvia Gennari, University of York, UK. Common competitive mechanisms in sentence production and comprehension Jukka Hyönä, University of Turku, Finland. Recognition of compound words during reading Martin Pickering, University of Edinburgh, UK. Understanding dialogue: Language use and social interaction Mikko Sams, Aalto University, Finland. Brain activity during listening and lip-reading natural narratives This workshop aims at bringing together researchers working on language for an event that will transcend disciplinary boundaries to give a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in the field and encourage new contacts, ideas and collaborations. Unlike most international events held in Russia’s Northern Capital that see the city packed with tourists during the White Night season around midsummer, we will meet in the depth of dark cold Russian winter. Among the advantages are low hotel rates and flight fares, hot scientific discussions (not hindered by the urge to party outside), beautiful city without crowds and some of the most exotic short winter days to be seen on the planet and lots of snow — if we are lucky.
