The G20 Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation and Enhancing Conservation of Terrestrial Habitats was launched in November 2020, during the Saudi Presidency of G20, at the Riyadh (Virtual) Summit of the G20 leaders. The Initiative’s objectives are to prevent, halt and reverse land degradation with a shared G20 ambition to reduce degraded land by 50 percent by 2040. Annex 1 of the 2020 Environment Ministers Communique which elaborates on the Initiative states that “the initiative will be implemented through the Initiative Coordination Office (ICO) under oversight of the UNCCD. The ICO will receive guidance and strategic direction from the Steering Committee consisting of all interested G20 Members, the Secretariat of the UNCCD, FAO, UNEP as well as non-member countries and other institutions that contribute to the work of the ICO.”. Accordingly, a steering committee has now been constituted. 18 G20 members as well as UNCCD, UNEP, and FAO have nominated their representatives to the steering committee. List attached.
