The boreal forests of Russia are one of the last remaining areas of extensive intact forest of the world. Because of their size and biodiver-sity the contribution they make to global ecosystem function and climate change mitigation is significant. However, scientific evidence has raised concerns about the impacts of climate change on the health of the boreal ecosystem. Much of the research carried out on the boreal forests in Russia has focused on the ecology and biodiversity in preference to studies about forest ecosystem services and the specific role of forests as carbon sinks and as buffers to climate-related extreme events. To raise awareness about the contribution made by Russian forests to climate change mitigation experts from the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and Eberswalde University for Sustainable Devel-opment /Centre for Econics and Ecosystem Manage-ment, together with colleagues from Russia are holding a series of workshops titled „The im-portance of forests in the Russian Federation as carbon sinks for ecosystembased adaptation to climate change”. The workshops are funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Envi-ronment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU). The latest research findings about ecosystem services provided by primary and unmanaged old-growth forests, and the role they play in climate change mitigation will be presented and discussed in three workshops. Opportuni-ties to raise questions about forest manage-ment and adaptation of forests to climate change will also be given. In the closing stages of the workshops a set of action points and recommendations for further activities, including the proposal for an inter-disciplinary research project will be presented. The dates and venue for the event are the 10th to 12th December, 2014 on the isle of Vilm. The workshop will be translated simultaneously into Russian and German. Board and lodging will be provided at the BfN's nature conserva-tion academy on the island of Vilm.
