The Baikal Lake is the deepest lake in the World, while the Baikal Rift is a nascent ocean. The vertical component of electric field Ez in the hydrosphere can be free from telluric interference and therefore can be used for monitoring of different processes in the hydrosphere itself, in the lithosphere and atmosphere. The experiment on monitoring of Ez on the baseline surface-floor has been carried out in the Baikal since 2003. Since 2012, the experiment also includes the measurements of sea currents and magnetic field (and its gradient). The effect and precursors of a close earthquake, variations of the water transport, and variations of the global electric circuit closure current in the conducting Earth have been studied. Considering the complex character of electromagnetic monitoring, with planned extension of the observation network, requires detailed knowledge of the geoelectric cross-section over entire Baikal Rift. Therefore, a preliminary detailed 3D geoelectric model of Baikal and the entire surrounding land has been constructed on the base of all available geoelectric and other geophysical and geological data. The model helped clarify some geological views by Ez monitoring. However, value of the created model goes far beyond the needs of the interpretation of the monitoring data. It can serve as a basis for future areal regional and detailed magnetotelluric studies.
