Chaika settlement is situated 8 km away from the present-day Evpatoria. It was founded in 360s BC as one of the outposts of Chersonian state’s farther chora in North-Western Crimea. As the result of excavations in the years 2002-2004 and in 2013 done by Department of archaeology of the Moscow Lomonosov State University in the outskirts of the settlement a complex of at least three Farmhouses was revealed about 120 m away from the initial Chersonian fortress. In contrast to other agricultural settlements that emerged not earlier than the third quarter of the 4th century BC and were located in the farther outskirts of the site, these estates were built at the same time or right after the defensive works of the fortress. Such early period of construction can be explained by estates’ close proximity to the Chaika fortification and allows the conclusion that the adjacent territory was being systematically developed. Estates were not fortified. The layouts of the estates correspond to the main principles of the Greek housebuilding. At the turn of the 4-3 centuries BC these estates were abandoned by their inhabitants without any visible cause. No traces of violent destruction (such as arrows, burnt layers etc.) were found. However, the Chaika fortress was destroyed in the same period of time. Apparently, these two occurrences were interconnected. The total area of the revealed building remains makes more than 400 m2. The large amount of archeological material made it possible to learn about the history of this settlement and lives of its inhabitants.
