The article critically surveys the traditional view of the structure ‘article + noun’ represented in contemporary English grammar books and suggests a new, cognitive-grammatical approach to specify the meaning of each article form of a noun in the system by correlating their semantics in speech and the thought processes that determine their functioning. The approach should increase the learner’s awareness of the article forms of nouns and will help interpret them unambiguously in any text as well as stimulate correct usage.
