Based on modeling results, the possibility of a "self-development" effect as a source of growth in sea-level anomalies is not prohibited by the theory. There need not be any cause for specific level changes or shifts; it is merely the expected behavior of so-called red noise processes. This generates a chaotic sequence of anomalies. The chaotic character of the time series creates problems in interpreting the level fluctuations as a direct response to climate variations.
