Presentation covers several topics: • State of lean thinking in the education institutions now • Universities and Schools as a bottleneck of the flow of new knowledge dissemination • What is needed from universities/schools to support lean transformation in the country • Strategies for developing educational institutions to be able to support transformation process Lean transition of the country (Quality revolution if you will) is a result of many components, that has to come in one time in one place. In general it means that many economic agents have to make a transition to innovative path of development – from mass productions model to lean model. In order to realize it in the scale of the country several conditions should be met: 1. Need of transition to innovative path should be recognized and declared by leaders of the country, industries, companies, experts. Thus it should become a national “problem”. 2. Knowledge about lean management should be widely available. 3. Process of transformation should become wide-spread in terms of industries, territories, scale of companies. Need for the transfer to innovative line is recognized in the country. Initiatives on the macro level such as Skolkovo Innovative Center is an evidence. We may state that the key problem now is the speed of transition process, which is rather low. Availability of the knowledge is also rather low. There are translated books, few conferences in the subject. But there is a shortage of local expertise, written materials and lean community. Experience of other countries demonstrate the role of Education institutions in the transition process. They should take an active role in speeding up the process of transition to innovative line of development and play an important role in this process in mid-term scale by preparing people with new thinking, producing new local knowledge about Lean to support transition process and making it available to the public. What already exist in the education institutions? That is needed from them? What is the gap? What are the strategies for developing educational institutions? This are the questions to cover in the presentation and for further discussion.
