The report discusses how idioms are currently taught to Russian learners of English. It is argued that manuals coming from the West neglect some important nuances of second language acquisition, which, consequently, entails a conscious or unconscious shift of conventional methodological principles that take into account the norms of the vernacular and the target language. It is claimed that manuals authored by western researchers greatly hinder the academic process and targets some imaginary bilinguals, which is not the case about most Russian students. The report analyses an illustration of the western approach and proposes an alternative.
