TUS, the first orbital detector of extreme energy cosmic rays (EECRs, energies above 50 EeV), registered a few dozen events with waveforms that are similar to those expected from EECRs in their shape and duration. However, the signal does not move across the field of view of the detector in the majority of these events, and the signal is usually much stronger than predicted by simulations. As a rule, events of this kind were registered near airports. We discuss a possible origin of these “fake” EECR events, and how they can be suppressed in the future missions.
