Transformations of alkanes in the presence of Lewis acids are usually treated from the standpoint of the carbocation mechanism . In this work the alkyl mechanism of paraffin activation over such catalysts has been found basing on the low temperature IR- spectroscopic in situ studies and quantum-mechanical accounts. The pathways of the formation of isomerization and metathesis products over the mixed binuclear complexes of aluminum/cobalt halides were established. The key role of the complexes with metal-metal bond was found in the activation of the alkanes.
