History ordered (played its card) that Bertolt Brecht had cast a shadow of a revolutionary and a reformer over his works. Being the creator of the epic theatre, Brecht became the synonymous with political theatre. From force of history all Brecht’s characters -“The Good Person of Szechwan”, Mother Courage, Galilei, Mack the Knife – became the participants of solitary picket not for anything, but always against something. Brecht’s plays do not pass from the picture, but each performance has not only theatrical, but a socio-political impact. When you touch upon Brecht - as the joke runs – you will certainly put foot in politics. The fact that in this theatrical season Moscow theatres offer a wide range of Bertolt Brecht’s works rather leads to misfortune. Each time has its own favorite authors, while Brecht comes from the time of “great upheaval”. It was the time when any resistance seemed to be vain. But it only seemed. “If the town is governed unfair – it must rebel. If it doesn’t rebel – let it die in fire before the night falls”. It’s the idea of Brecht, not an extremistic one. “Kind people cannot remain kind in our country,” – wrote Bertolt Brecht. Ancient people were looking for a “Man” with lamps and it’s unknown whether they had found him. At least in Moscow you can find a kind person. In the theatre. “The Good Person of Szechwan” is staged in The Moscow Pushkin Drama Theatre by director Yuri Butusov.
