Investigation of peculiarities of various modes of cell death is one of the most actively developing fields of biomedical research. Mitochondria are key participants of various cell death modalities, and almost every disease seems to have some mitochondrial angle. Suppression of apoptotic pathways characterizes the majority of tumors, and stimulation of apoptosis is a promising therapeutic strategy for cancer cell elimination. However, when triggering apoptosis, one should consider a metabolic profile of a particular tumor. The interplay between different forms of cell death can markedly affect apoptosis progression. Successful treatment of tumors with conventionally used anticancer drugs should be combined with targeting metabolic pathways involved in the regulation of apoptosis, autophagy, and cellular bioenergetics. In the presentation, the crosstalk between apoptosis, autophagy and endoplasmic reticulum stress will be discussed.
