A tsunami is a series of sea waves, generated in a water layer by an impulsive disturbance, such as earthquakes, landslides, volcanic eruptions, explosions, and even the impact of meteorites. Attacking coastlines, tsunamis can cause devastating property damage and loss of life. This talk will provide an overview of the state-of-the-art of tsunami problem including the following basic items: • General information about tsunamis; • Evidence of great ancient tsunamis; • Recent tsunami events; • Historical catalogues and databases; • Tsunami measurement and data analysis; • The physics of tsunamis: generation, propagation, and run-up; • Numerical and laboratory simulation of tsunami; • Tsunami deposits and their role in hazard assessment; • Tsunami Warning System; • Tsunami hazard mitigation.
