Аннотация доклада:
Discoveries relating to the investigation of electrical discharge in rfarefied gases were direcctly connected with the development of vacuum technique. Improvements in the mercury pumps made by Geissler and Toepler in 1850-60-s contributed to knowledge about cathode rays (Hittorf, Crookes, Hertz). The discovery of electron by J.J. Thomson was grounded on the new vacuum technology, which allowed to get a really high vacuum.
