During periodontium disease the connective tissue consisting of cells and intracellular matrix formed in its turn of fibers of proteins (collagen, elastin) and the basic substance, is being affected. In recent years the method of physiotherapy has been widely applied in the treatment of periodontitis in present-day stomatological clinic. Physical factors make it possible to influence each link of pathogenesis and to eliminate distinct symptoms of periodontitis such as itch and bleeding in the gum area, inflammatory reaction, abscesses, suppuration and teeth mobility. Treatment of patients with light, middle and heavy degrees of generalized periodontitis has been carried out at the Chair of Physiotherapeutic, Moscow State Medical Stomatological University for more than 20 years. At the first stage of treatment the main task was to remove inflammation of the periodontium tissue. With this purpose we carried out the anti-inflammatory therapy: magneto therapy, laser therapy, ultrahigh- or ultraviolet frequency therapy. At the next stage of treatment we applied electrophoresis of chitosan in combination with one of the physical factors (magneto therapy, ultra-tone frequency currents and currents of Darsonval) depending on the clinical necessity and symptoms. To carry out the electrophoresis we used a 0.5% aqueous solution of chitosan-hydrochloride at pH 4.5. One course of treatment consisted of 10 procedures, each of them lasted 15-20 minutes daily or every other day using the diametrical or longitudinal method. We observed that after the introduction of chitosan actual complete rehabilitation of periodontium functions was achieved. The clinical signs were the following: patients had a complete normalization of blood circulation and disappearance of any stagnation in the periodontium tissues. Gums attained normal colour and became more elastic, acquired thickness and got wrapped on the teeth necks tightly. Patients cured in this way have got a possibility to have irremovable dental prosthetic appliance.
