Our study shows that spruce and pine forests in central Kola Peninsula can be identified by their multitemporal backscatter in Sentinel 1 SAR imagery. Birch forests cannot be identified in this way, possibly because they have different seasonal dynamics on the mountain slopes and on the plains, they can be located on a slope or terrace, they can be sparse, and, in this case, backscatter also contains significant information about the understorey.
