This work is dedicated to Russian noun phrases like (1). They cause problems for many theories of agreement, including those of Minimalism (suggested in (Chomsky, 1993), modified in (Chomsky, 2000) and changing little since), because noun is plural whereas adjectives are singular, moreover, how many objects the noun phrase denotes is defined by how many singular adjectives it has. (1) krasnyij i=belyij flag-i red.SG and=white.SG flag-PL ‘a/the red flag and a/the white one’ Unlike noun phrases like the subject in (2a) with plural agreement on a verb, it is not enough to say we have an ellipsis (like (2b) suggests) because it does not explain how plural on the noun in (1) emerges. (2) a. [Krasnyij i=belyij flag] razvevayutsya na=zdanii. red.SG and=white.SG flag.SG flutter.PRS.PL on=building.SG.LOC b. [Krasnyij flag i=belyij flag] razvevayutsya na=zdanii. red.SG flag.SG and=white.SG flag.SG flutter.PRS.PL on=building.SG.LOC ‘A red flag and a white one flutter on a/the building.’ For Spanish, a similar phenomenon was described in Minimalism by Bosque (2006), and I shall attempt to transfer it to Russian making necessary changes; the idea of asymmetrical conjunction of extended projections only from (Wilder, 1994) will also be used, as well as Universal DP hypothesis of (Pereltsvaig, 2007).
