P300-based brain-computer interface speller provides severely disabled persons an alternative to lost communication channels. The system demands high concentration from the user and thus is potentially prone to errors due to reduced attention and gaze shifts. In this pilot study, the effect of gaze and attention shifts on BCI performance was examined under two experimental conditions: “control”, where the gaze and attention were focused on the same stimulus, and “distraction”, where they were directed to different stimuli. The results obtained suggest that both attention and gaze shifts to distracting stimuli lower the accuracy of P300 BCI system, representing a probable source of human error
