One of the processes of soil degradation in the steppe zone can be called soil compaction. However, in the conditions of soil agro-genesis, the identification of the specifics of the formation of compacted subsurface horizons often causes difficulties, and the causes of compaction of horizons cannot be clearly defined, which in turn makes it difficult to choose the necessary agro-technical methods of processing compacted soils. In fact, compaction is understood as "the process of reducing the porosity of unsaturated soils under the influence of effective pressure by reducing the air-bearing porosity in specific soil conditions, primarily granulometric composition and humidity." Soil compaction is a polygenetic process caused by anthropogenic and natural phenomena. A soil with signs of solonetz-forming, vertisol-forming processes involved in arable agriculture, do not have the full set of relevant diagnostic features, and they are often referred to agro-compacted and vice versa.
