The unique properties of graphene-based materials make them promising for application in polymer and metal composites, energy storage devices, microelectronics, catalysis, etc. Among these materials, graphene nanoflakes (GNFs) are distinct by the most simple synthesize technique that doesn’t require temperatures higher than 900°C and difficult transfer manipulations. Doping of graphene modifies its properties and may immobilize electronic and physical defects into layers affecting conductivity and surface properties. Doped graphenes have been widely applied in the electrocatalysis, metal-free catalysis, as electrode materials in supercapacitors and batteries. This work is devoted to specific type of GNFs, jellyfish-like few-layer graphene nanoparticles that are less than 50 nm in diameter, contain 5-7 graphene layers with bent edges and show high specific surface area (>1000 m2/g). We tested these undoped and doped GNFs as an electrode material in supercapacitors and as a support for Co-based hydrogenation catalysts. The small size of GNF particles makes possible to use them as a precursor for the synthesis of graphene quantum dots.
