The discussion about the (dis)advantages of formal frameworks vs functional frameworks often concentrates on programmatic declarations and metalinguistic issues such as the existence of Sapir’s pure grammatical concepts, the existence of dummy subjects and other kinds of zero syntactic categories, (non)-universality of syntactic relations and semantic roles, (dis) belief in Universal Grammar and universal hierarchy of functional projections, deterministic vs multifactor explanations, additive vs non-additive semantic build etc. In my talk, I argue that such programmatic and metalinguistic issues are less critical for the analysis of data than several technical challenges pertaining to the procedure. I list some of these challenges below.
