At the beginning of the XXIst century academic approach considering journalism a profession with its own ideology keeps their actuality. It still assumes such attributes as objectivity, autonomy, immediacy, ethics and public service. From research perspective journalism as profession implies 1) set of practical skills, 2) independent activities, 3) training and education, 4) labor organization and licensing, 5) social mission and social service. But today it should be re-conceptualized taking into consideration such transformational factors as digitalization, informatization, mediatization, globalization, internationalization, individualization etc. As a result nowadays exploratory reflection sometimes goes beyond symbolic system of distinct components typical for journalism. It goes beyond normative models construction and proposes the discussion about new phenomenological descriptions for journalism. This clash of traditional (professional) and new paradigms provide scholars with the opportunity to new tools of analysis. Proposed paper reflects the national specifics of journalism in Russia captured through the lenses of modern comparative studies. In other words it puts journalism as transnational phenomenon into national frames, stressing its core features in transforming context.
