I suggest that the OE Orosius emphasized the Divine Presence in the world history more expressly, than Orosius himself did. God is pictured as the Master of world, who moves it according to his own plans almost without communication with the human beings. I also suggest that while retelling Orosius’s stories of evils, wars and calamities, which were the mainstream of human history from the ancient times, Anglo-Saxon translator had in mind not only speculative ideas, but the issue actually relevant for his countrymen at the end of the 9-th century, namely Viking invasions and the most pressing need to fight them. His main aim was to convince Anglo-Saxons that their own times are not so bad, that calamities come and pass over and they ought to be steadfast and enduring, for in the Christian world there are no reasons for despair.
