The study is based on audience reception of one of the highest rating family drama TV series on Freeform cable channel which caused discussions in the critical realm and society in general. This groundbreaking series portrays a modern Californian family of two working moms – a white police officer Stefanie Adams Foster and school vice-principal of a mixed black and white parentage Lena Adams Foster – and their five children, four of them adopted. The evolution of this family channel from Christian Broadcasting Network to Fox Family Channel through ABS Family to Freeform reflects the shift away from a classic nuclear family towards more variety of family arrangements and possibilities for bringing up children in the contemporary United States itself. Freeform’s target demographic is designated by the channel as "becomers" – namely teenagers and young adults of 14- 34, with some skew towards young women. Foster children upbringing alongside with biological children, forming internal brotherly and sisterly bonds, controversial actions of the teenagers in the world outside the family based on the convictions formed within the family - discussion of all those aspects in the series was heightened by the fact that children were growing in a lesbian couple marriage. Created by openly gay Joanna Johnson, Brad Bredeweg and Peter Paige and produced by Jennifer Lopez, it was not unanimously greeted. But during its five-season run it gained sizable viewership and a number of awards for Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming of Television Critics Association. A particular focus of the series is on forming a young person’s active position in the world, ability to argue and prove one’s point of view and act according to that. In 2018 on Freeform there was spawned a sequel Good Trouble about the beginning of the two sisters career as a software engineer (Marianne) and a judge’s clerk (Callie) in Los Angeles when they try to remain true to their beliefs and ideals - mutual respect of all the family members and honesty towards themselves. Their actions as young citizens in Los Angeles multicultural society become a new focus.
