These phrases are often used synonymously. And they are, indeed, synonyms. However, as with other synonyms, their meanings do not completely overlap. What is more important, these “languages” imply different approaches on part of the teacher. This dichotomy of ESP teaching should be viewed as a basis of any ESP syllabus. An important issue – perhaps, to be resolved by each ESP teacher in their own way – is that of the proportion between the two “languages’. Here, the answer depends on both the audience with their specific needs and on the skills of the teacher.
