There is a specific reaction of the mu-rhythm depression, known as event related desynchronization (ERD). In EEG it appears during sensorimotor workload including voluntary movements, motor imagery (MI) and tactile stimulation. It is considered that ERD is associated with the activation in cortical sensorimotor circuits. However, the presence of ERD is highly variable between the subjects, especially during MI. The classical simulation theory describes the mechanism of motor imagery in terms of the motor cortical circuits, but alternative theories (e.g. emulation theory) emphasize the role of somatosensory experience in the MI. In this work, the possibility of a tactile imagery, isolated from motor mental representation, was investigated. Presented results provide EEG patterns of ERD/S (synchronization) similar to the cortical activation during tactile stimulation and MI.
