The paper focuses on the agreement behaviour of adverbs in Khwarshi (Nakh-Daghestanian, Tsezic) in a syntactic environment which, at a first glance, allows a choice between potential controllers. This environment is provided by the biabsolutive construction. We show that the variability in agreement controllers is structurally determined, and that the adverb agrees with the absolutive of the clause it belongs to. We propose that biabsolutive constructions in Khwarshi form a biclausal structure, and show that variable agreement of adverbials correlates with their structural position.
