The article presents an analytical review of new trends in Russian sociolinguistics of the XXIst century. The author identifies three main trends: (1) reinterpretation and attempts to revise sociolinguistic concepts and terms; (2) emergence of new topics, approaches and methods from the Western social sciences; and (3) increasing interdisciplinarity in approaches and methods. Each trend is illustrated by separate representative examples. As such, I consider: the native language category, the direction of ethnography of language policy, linguistic landscapes, language ideologies (in particular, “monolingual ideology”), the use of psycholinguistic and mathematical methods for sociolinguistic purposes.
