The adaptation of radiation technologies to plastics recycling undoubtedly depends on the perfection of electron accelerators. The accelerator is the main tool in radiation technology, but in the past, accelerators were not designed for large-scale plastics recycling. Currently, there are development projects for specialized powerful accelerators with diversified control over the direction and configuration of the beams and the absorbed energy in the target. Such innovative models would be more convenient to combine with other processing equipment and would reduce the cost of irradiation several times. Mr. Hoffman highlighted the negative impact of heteroatomic plastics on recycling. Radiation technology offers effective methods for the removal of heteroatoms, in particular dechlorination and debromination. Radiation-induced changes in the surface energy and bulk properties of plastic can also serve to intensify the sorting of heteroatomic plastics and their subsequent transformation into road and construction composites that are inaccessible by other technologies. Of course, cooperation with recycling companies is one of the key conditions in perfection of accelerators and in adapting pyrolysis reactors to accommodate irradiation technologies.
