The behavior of remanent saturation magnetization (Irs) has been studied on samples from the two cores of peat deposits. It is shown that the Irs value is controlled by the amount of mineral matter in peat samples. Microprobe analysis has led to conclusions about the genesis of the mineral substances. The significant increase of Irs values in the upper layers of peat strata is due to anthropogenic pollution. In contrast, multiple sharp increases of Irs in the deep layers of peat are associated with extraordinary cosmogenic and explosive events. Relatively smooth cyclical changes of Irs down the peat strata are due to the changes in the amount of clastic minerals in peat samples, apparently linked to the climate change. We use a method based on a combination of petromagnetic and microprobe analysis which provides information on both cyclical and single short-term effects on the studied ecosystem. Petromagnetic parameters allow to determine the rhythm of external influence on the ecosystem, and microprobe studies help to identify its origin. We were able to distinguish and date the particular layers containing particles indicative of catastrophic events.
