Russian historical culture has been growing exponentially in the last decades. The new memory and historical projects, most of them grass-root, are organized; new policies are implemented; debates about monuments and school books break out. History has become an arena of political, social, and cultural contestation. Our panel addresses the various forms and topics of the contemporary Russian historical culture. The papers discuss the influence of the old and the new media on the contents of memory and the juxtaposition of the ‘grand’ and ‘local’ historical cultures that has become more prominent in recent years.
