The term ‘WORD’ is one of the central concepts of linguistic science. It has changed over the centuries: at different times, the compilers of grammars gave it their own interpretations, and the new ones were noticeably different from the previous ones. So, the study is devoted to describing how the meaning of the term ‘WORD’ in the Russian grammatical texts changed under the influence of the Greek tradition. It is demonstrated that in the grammars of the pre-Peter era, the term ‘WORD’ is reflected in such concepts as LOGOS (a monumental concept of the ancient Greek philosophy), LEXIS, PHRASIS, VERB and UTTERANCE. The materials for the study were grammatical texts translated into Slavic from Greek: from I. Damaskin to Meletiy Smotrytsky. The monograph of Ignatius Vikentievich Yagich was used as a source. The results obtained make it possible to significantly clarify important aspects of the formation of the Russian linguistic terminology.
