The Tandem Walk is a standard sensorimotor test of dynamic postural stability [1, 2]. 19 Russian cosmonauts (mission duration of 159,8±19,5 days) have performed the Tandem Walk test: 60 and 30 days before the space flight (SF), during the first hour after landing and on the 3-4th, the 7-8th and the 12th days after SF. In the Tandem Walk test, the subjects walked in a heel-to-toe fashion at a self-selected speed for 10-12 steps with their arms crossed on their chests. Four Tandem Walk trials were performed per session: 3 times with eyes closed and 1 time with eyes open. If the gap between the two feet was too large or a side step was required to maintain balance, then the step was considered erroneous. Before SF, the percentage of erroneous steps with eyes open was 4.69±2.29%, and with eyes closed - 11.91±4.97%. This result changed significantly in the first hour after landing and was 67.43±23.02% with eyes open and 82.31±11.50% with eyes closed. Performance decrements were still observed 3-4 and 7-8 days after SF. Full recovery did not occur until 10-12 days after SF. The percentage of erroneous steps remained significantly high in both eyes-open (R+3-4: 8.76±5.27%; R+7-8: 6.17±4.34%) and eyes-closed conditions (R+3-4: 29.71±14.40%; R+7-8: 21.31±10.58%). These results suggest an additional sensorimotor countermeasure may be necessary for interplanetary missions [2].
