A2E is a product of visual cycle whose accumulation is associated with degenerative diseases. In this study A2E were photooxidezed and 2D fluorescence spectra were obtained. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF-SIMS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) revealed chemical changes during the process of photooxidation. Aldehydes accumulation was observed and some new structures of the resulting compounds were proposed. It was shown the products of the photooxidative destruction of A2E cause modification of hemoglobin.
