The ability of bright photon sources to rapidly remove the inner-shell electrons from atoms has become an exciting area of research in recent years since it encompasses a region that lies on the boundary of atomic and plasma physics. This is in part due to the increasing availability of such radiation-generating sources as XFELs and next-generation petawatt laser facilities that can generate high-intensity x-ray fields. These experimental platforms can be used to create novel states of matter with empty inner sub-shells and to explore the regime where the radiation interaction dominates the plasma kinetics.
