The local population of critically endangered Spoon-billed Sandpiper Eurynorhynchus pygmeus near Meinypilgyno Village, southern Chukotka, northern Far Eastern Russia was discovered in 2001 when it was estimated at 70-80 breeding pairs. This was and still is the largest known local breeding population of the species. Since then, the population was monitored on almost annual basis with varying intensity and coverage. By 2012 it declined by an order of magnitude. If this trend continues it will bring this population to extinction in about 10 years.
