In this study, the pattern of daily and seasonal groundwater fluctuations in the desert environment with rarely precipitation (less than 50 mm per year) and strong potential evapotranspiration (more than 1400 mm per year) of the lower Heihe River (northwestern China) was analyzed. The main objective of this study is to: 1) analyze the diurnal and seasonal groundwater dynamics under the different land covers and the controlling factors; 2) quantify the phreatic water evaporation, and evaluate relationships between land cover in different settings and ET rate.
