The conceptual metaphor in the politician’s discourse is not only a stylistic tool to embellish their rhetoric, but a cognitive tool to understand reality and even to construct political reality. It is a persuasive vehicle to influence the audience’s emotions and thoughts. The political reality made by politicians can be decoded by analyzing how they use conceptual metaphors in their discourses.This study focuses on sport metaphors in the eight State of the Union addresses delivered by Barack Obama from 2009 to 2016. We have singled out six target domains generating from the source domain of sport. These target domains are economic competition, education competition, immigration opportunity, politics, innovation competition, and America. Among these domains, the economic sphere is the primary focus in Obama’s speeches as far as the frequency of sport metaphors is concerned.
