Nowadays, it’s impossible to imagine expert work without using modern technologies. It is widely accepted to use database where it is necessory to work with a large volume of data parametric and nonparametric. So, in Russian Federal Centre of Forensic science (Laboratory of soil and biological forensic science) with the help of professor Natalia Kirillova from the the Soil Science Department of Moscow State University the database has been developed, using DBMS Microsoft Access. Today, it contains the information about nearly 250 soil samples, collected from caseworks and research. Here we need to give some short characteristic of the database. First of all a user should fill background information about particular casework. The ID number of case, the surname of the expert, GPS or address (where the soil was taken), the date of the case, the name of police officer (investigator) and police station. The next step is to give full survey dealing with a soil sample. Also an expert has to input all soil properties, which had been determined during examination: 1) The number of a sample; 2) Where the sample is collected; 3) Soil colour; 4) Granulometric composition/fractional composition; 5) Petrographic and Mineralogical composition; 6) Anthropogenic particles complex (inclusions) 7) Degree of carbonate activity; 8) Degree of oil residues like asphalt; 9) The mass of the soil sample. This list could be expanded at any time. The database possesses valuable abilities for data processing and complex problems solving. Firstly, the database is required to provide a statistical estimation of the significance of expert evidence. Secondly, organized data is a useful tool for rapid search and retrieval and accessing large amount of information about soil samples efficiently. Soil material, obtained from caseworks, can be used, for example, to count the frequency of inclusions occurrence, or frequency of cases, connected with very small amount of traces. And, finally, the collection of data represents the problems with their solutions and related experience.
