The tremendous progress in mass-market applications of metal-ion batteries facilitates the research on electrode materials for Na-ion batteries as a complimentary technology to the already matured Li-ion. Nowadays, two chemistries of Na-based electrode materials are extensively scrutinized: oxides and polyanions. The latter ones display a wider structural diversity thus offering a larger playground for designing specific electrochemical properties. Polyanions also exhibit better cycling and thermal stability and higher C-rate capability due to covalently bonded structural frameworks. In this sense, NASICON and KTiOPO4 (KTP)-type structures deserve special attention since they enable fast three-dimensional Na+ ion transport and easily accomodate a variety of transition metals thus enriching the design opportunities and allowing widely tuning the electrochemical properties.
