In this work, experiments were carried out on the recording of birefringent microstructures under the action of focused ultrashort laser pulses with several fixed pulse energy levels at a fixed depth in the volume of fused quartz. The phase shift was measured for various microstructure recording conditions, and as a result of this analysis, a mechanism was proposed that explains the formation of nanogratings responsible for birefringence, their location and orientation relative to the optical axis of laser radiation, and the nature of the dependence of the phase shift on the energy/intensity of laser pulses.
