Abstract: The work is a study of the materials of two courses of specialized English as a foreign language for undergraduate students of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology in the second and third years of study. The main goal of the study was to substantiate and confirm the hypothesis that without additional knowledge of cultural and philological aspects, students studying English in the context of academic and scientific specialization may have difficulty navigating the course materials. During the study, audio, video, and textual materials of the courses were analyzed to identify linguistic phenomena that caused difficulties in understanding for students belonging to generation Z. Methodologically, the research was based on oral interviews with students and teachers involved in the courses, as well as spontaneous conversations that arose during the discussion of course materials both during classes with students and informal communication with course instructors. The results of the work included collection, analysis, and classification of linguistic, cultural, and other phenomena present in both courses. In the course of the study, the confirmation of the working hypothesis in the part that even specialized courses of English as a foreign language may contain a large amount of material with a philological character, the knowledge and understanding of which is necessary for a deeper understanding of the course content was tested and achieved.
