We study evolution of isolated neutron stars of different types and try to establish evolutionary links between them. We start with derivation of initial spin period distribution of neutron stars in supernova remnants, and discuss possible existence of "hidden" magnetars among central compact objects. Then we present population synthesis of close-by isolated neutron stars and discuss the dichotomy of these sources (radio pulsars and so-called "Magnificent seven" - thermally emitting radio silent neutron stars). Finally, we probe magnetic field evolution on different time scales using populations of radio pulsars for ages about few hundred thousand years years and HMXBs for ages about few million years. We demonstrate that existing tools (field decay mechanisms, strong fall-back, emerging magnetic field) can help to construct a unified scenarion of neutron star evolution. Possible problems which this approach can face are discussed.
