This paper presents the educational cartographic project that combines various information about relief and its global structure over the Russia. The Cartographic Encyalopaedia of Relief in Russia includes the multiscale hypsometric map based on the newly generated HYPSO elevation models (abstract also submitted to the conference). These models are developed especially for small-scale terrain visualization. They allow zooming between 1:1 000 000 and 1:50 000 000 scales while having the morphologically sound hypsometric representation of the terrain with appropriately generalised features. The next thematic layer is geomorphological zoning. Earth surface can be treated as a system of relief forms of different horizontal and vertical extents, varying from tiny biogenic to large continental landforms. These forms comprise partonomic hierarchy. Geomorphological zoning supplements this concept by adding geographical and genetic context to it. In Russian mapping a geomorphological zoning by S.S.Voskresensky (1980) is popular which subdivides the relief into countries, districts, provinces and areas. Combined with multiscale hypsometric representation, the zoning allows research of the relief hierarchy in a variety of scales. Every zone is accompanied by textual description in an interactive HTML document, which allows simultaneous reading the reference and viewing the relief representation. Previously (Samsonov & Khaliullina 2014) we reported on inclusion of zoning layer into multiscale hypsometric map of Russia. However, this zoning was digitized from extremely small scale book schemes (scale about 1:20 000 000) and was not geographically and topologically aligned with structural lines of the underlying elevation models which are much more detailed. A large manual work was conducted and supervised by specialists in geomorphology to conflate the digitized lines with terrain features, which resulted in a more detailed and accurate zoning. Inclusion of polygonal zoning features allows the user to query the main morphometric parameters for each geomorphological region. Another addition that widened the encyclopaedic resources was the inclusion of the main rivers taken from 1:10 000 000 VSEGEI Topographic Map ([http://www.vsegei.ru/ru/info/topo/]). The basins of rivers were derived in a semi-automatic mode from GMTED2010 15 arc seconds model. Inclusion of a river and basin layers allows the user to query the terrain parameters by their geometry. Finally, new information layers about the main mountains in Russia was also added, including the detailed cartographic visualizations of the terrain in the nighborhood derived from ASTER GDEM and SRTM models. The Cartographic Encyalopaedia of Relief in Russia is an electronic atlas that provides the diverse representation of the global features of terrain in Russia: using multiscale cartographic representations, providing the spatial zoning and the appropriate reference information, including the main rivers and their basins as a features of the phenomenon that is tightly connected to the terrain and its morphology. The atlas can be used for various educational and reference purposes.
