The stabilization of low-valent derivatives of Group 14 elements (M = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb) may be achieved by application of sterically voluminous substituents at M (kinetic stabilization) or by bonding with groups capable to additional donation to the M (thermodynamic stabilization). In this work the synthesis and structure of various polydentate ligands (N,N,N-, N,N,O-, O,N,O-), tetrylenes based on them (germylenes, stannylenes, plumbylenes) and transition metal complexes of the tetrylenes studied are investigated. Approaches to the related silylenes are also described.
